Engaging Youth in a Digital Green Future
Project Description
Taking into account the pandemic ravaging Europe and the imminent economic crisis already spreading across the world, what we might consider a reconstruction, reconstitution or renewal of political, social and economic paradigms should be imposed. Furthermore, the main objective should be to make the European Green Deal the framework for emerging from the crisis, incorporating the lessons we are learning. Concern for environmental issues has been growing in the European Union in recent years. The main objectives are to ensure that Europe becomes the first continent in the world to achieve carbon neutrality before 2050, to achieve a sustainable economy in which greenhouse gas emissions disappear by 2050, to decouple economic growth from resource use, and to leave no person or place behind.
Objectives
- Bring young people closer to the major sustainability policies of the European Union (European Green Deal, “Fit for 55”, 2030 Agenda) and to the debate on the ecological and digital transition.
- Encourage the active participation of young people in the design of solutions and projects related to sustainability, climate and sustainable development, both at local and European levels.
- Develop digital and civic competences in young people, combining online tools and face-to-face spaces to debate, design and communicate green and digital initiatives.
- Create materials, methodologies and open resources for working with young people on sustainability, the Green Deal and the SDGs, usable by youth centres and training institutions.
Implementation
The implementation of the project is based on the organisation of participatory dynamics (participation days, youth events, face-to-face and virtual meetings) in which young people analyse frameworks such as the European Green Deal and the 2030 Agenda, propose concrete actions and co-design local impact projects (waste reduction, sustainable mobility, environmental education, etc.), accompanied by educators and mentors; simultaneously, training activities are developed for teachers and youth workers in participation methodologies and sustainability education, and all processes, good practices and materials are collected in a methodology and a set of open resources (guides, activity banks, digital tools and participation examples) that are published on the project website for use and replication in other European contexts.
Expected Results
Greater understanding and commitment of young people to European sustainability policies and the Sustainable Development Goals, translated into real initiatives at local level.
Strengthening of youth civic participation in climate change and ecological transition issues, with opportunities for voice and leadership in forums and decision-making processes.
Existence of a participation and sustainability education methodology and a set of open resources used in youth centres, schools and training institutions.
Consolidation of transnational working networks among youth, education and sustainability organisations for the dissemination of youth participation models in the “digital green future”.
