Positive Parenting (P+)

Positive Parenting (P+): an autism parent training to address children problem behaviour and teach them socially important skills

Project Description

One of the biggest challenges parents often face is managing their children’s behaviour. Especially for parents of children with autism (ASD), behavioural challenges can be even greater due to the child’s skill deficits (i.e. communication). For parents who want to be able to manage their children’s behaviour, help them acquire the developmental skills they need to regulate their own behaviour, as well as teach them new skills, behavioural therapy techniques can be very effective.

Objectives

Implementation

The project is implemented through the development of a structured positive parenting programme, adapted to different educational and social contexts, and the delivery of face-to-face and blended learning training for educators and families. Implementation includes cycles of practical workshops for parents, role-play dynamics, analysis of real-life cases and the use of audiovisual materials and action guides. The consortium organises transnational meetings to exchange practices and design common tools (guides, protocols and multi-purpose materials) that can be replicated in other countries.

Expected Results

Improved quality of family interaction, with fewer conflicts, greater understanding between parents and children and a more positive emotional climate.

Increased parental competencies in positive discipline, emotion management and prevention of problematic behaviours and risk of violence.

Creation of resources and good practice guides on positive parenting aimed at professionals and families, with an evidence-based approach.

Strengthening of the European network of services and professionals working with families, improving coordination between education, health and social services.
