The Spirit of Europe – Origins
Project Description
Gaming is an important activity for people of all ages. And since it generates learning regardless of gender, its content can be enriched with any knowledge or topic that the designer considers, as long as the product is maintained as a game, which requires a system of rules and rewards. Whether we sharpen our arithmetic skills by playing draughts, or boost our divided attention by playing a modern shooter game, all games develop some skill at some level, regardless of the knowledge about the game itself. But what if the knowledge about the game itself were something much more necessary for today’s society and was barely addressed in schools?
Objectives
-
To teach the ancient history of Europe (Ancient Greece, the Roman Empire, the Dark Ages, the Viking Age, the Renaissance) through a free and innovative educational video game.
- To make history accessible and engaging for diverse audiences: adults, young people (13-30 years old), migrants, teachers, and workers from various sectors.
-
To foster experiential learning through interactive missions across 5 maps per historical era, combining entertainment with historical knowledge.
-
To promote European identity and intercultural understanding through gamified narratives that connect the past with current EU values.
Implementation
The tSoe (The Spirit of Europe) project is implemented by developing a free educational video game that covers 5 key eras of European history through 25 interactive maps with gamified missions. Aimed at young people, adults, migrants, and educators, it combines entertainment with historical learning through gameplay mechanics that encourage exploration and discovery. The European consortium coordinates its creation, testing, and free dissemination since May 2021, integrating it into formal and informal educational environments to promote a shared European identity.
Expected Results
Video game "The Spirit of Europe" available free of charge for PC since May 2021, featuring 25 interactive maps (5 for each of the 5 historical eras).
Downloadable educational resources and teaching guides for history and humanities teachers to integrate the video game into their classes.
Impact on libraries, museums, local authorities, and adult education centres, with thousands of downloads and recorded gameplay sessions.
Improvement of European historical awareness among young people, migrants, and adults, strengthening shared identity and intercultural dialogue.
