Cybersecurity literacy to empower seniors towards safe digitalisation

Project Description

When promoting digital learning among older people, cybersecurity is vital, as it provides peace of mind, alleviates anxiety, builds trust in the digital environment and helps overcome barriers. Indeed, cybersecurity is a human right that must be safeguarded through policies that guarantee privacy, informed consent and autonomy.

20% of the Spanish population – around nine and a half million people – are elderly.

In the current climate, the number of people over the age of 65 who have made the leap into the digital world has also grown. According to recent research on digital skills, in Spain only 6.5% of people over the age of 65 have the skills needed to use new technologies, and only half of those aged between 65 and 74 who are internet users consider themselves to have the necessary digital skills to use it – despite the widespread use of mobile phones for years among this age group.

Objectives

Implementation

  1. Seniors (aged 60 and over): This demographic has embraced digitalisation to a considerable extent over the last two years, precisely because of the increasingly regular use of technological tools in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has increased the risk of them becoming easy targets for cybercriminals who exploit their vulnerability. It is also important to bear in mind that this demographic grew up in a generation when these technologies did not exist and are afraid to use them, which makes them even more vulnerable in terms of digital security.
  2. Adult education trainers working with adults aged over 60: The presence of new technologies in the classroom has become a challenge for both learners and trainers. Cybersecurity education is a key factor in training trainers to promote digital safety in adult education, particularly for those working in the ICT sector. Therefore, training teachers in cybersecurity so that they can act as catalysts and facilitators of information is essential for raising awareness among learners, particularly older adults, of the importance of adopting responsible and safe online behaviour.

Expected Results

A methodological guide for trainers working with adults aged over 60. This guide will contain, on the one hand, relevant information on the current situation of older people in terms of their digital and cybersecurity skills in the partner countries, as well as the new challenges they face. On the other hand, it will contain information, resources and methods to help trainers implement and promote cybersecurity as part of lifelong learning in the field of adult education.

A Moodle platform as a training support tool for the face-to-face course. It will enable the storage of materials and resources on cybersecurity, as well as user interaction throughout the training period.

«Ciberacy»: cybersecurity literacy training for older people. This specialised training will provide older people with limited cybersecurity skills through face-to-face sessions.
